Bach's Lunch Concert: Beethoven's "Ghost Trio"

Bach's Lunch Concert: Beethoven's "Ghost Trio"

Kathy Southworth, piano; Matt Dickey, violin; and Min Lee, cello

Beethoven's Piano Trio in D Major, Op. 70, #1 (the "Ghost") is one of the masterworks of the repertoire for violin, cello and piano. Surrounded by two joyful and energetic fast movements, the eerie and startling second movement, marked "largo assai ed espressivo," was referred to by Carl Czerny as reminiscent of a ghost, giving the Trio a nickname which has lasted two centuries. This remarkable movement, characterized by strange harmonies, deep bass rumblings, and floating melodic fragments, was composed around the time that Beethoven was considering an opera based on Shakespeare's Macbeth. Although the opera was never completed, sketches for the opera's "Witches Dance" contain similar music to the "Ghost" Trio.

Thursday, March 14, 12:10 to 12:50pm. Free and open to the public.
