. . . . . . .
10:00am – Purple Finches Youth Chorus Performance (Community Room)
10:00am – Student Performances (Recital Hall)
1:30pm – Student Performances (Recital Hall)
Discover the music inside you – Community music-making!
11:00am – Community Drumming – Grace Schust & Lindsey Schust (Community Room)
At the 11:00am Community Drumming session, attendees can learn to play “Kuku,” a celebration rhythm from West Africa, and enjoy this world tradition of community music. Faculty members Grace Schust & Lindsey Schust will give a quick intro to African drum technique before we learn together. All ages and abilities are welcome; drums will be provided.
11:00am - 2:00pm – Instrument Petting Zoo (Lower level)
Want to toot a flute, honk a horn, tickle the keys of a grand piano, or draw a bow across a beautiful cello? Here’s your chance! The Instrument Petting Zoo runs from 11:00am to 2:00pm, giving everyone a chance to try more than a dozen musical instruments with help from friendly faculty members and experienced students. The Zoo is also a great way to introduce children to various instruments, so they can decide what they may be interested in.
11:30am – Musical Theater Audition Workshop – Ellen Nordstrom (Recital Hall)
Singers and actors are encouraged to join faculty member Ellen Nordstrom’s Musical Theater Audition Workshop at 11:30, to learn the audition tips that have helped Music School students win high honors in vocal competitions and lead roles in musical theater! Ellen will give helpful preparation guidance for any audition, and will work with several students in a master class setting so that all can learn from practical experience.
12:00 noon – Grand Sound Jam – David Tonkin (Community Room)
The Grand Sound Jam starts at 12:00 noon. Bring anything that makes sound – a pot & spoon, sticks, kazoo, saxophone, your voice – and we’ll create some music together! (We’ll have some stuff to borrow, too.) Music School faculty member David Tonkin will divide the group into “orchestra sections,” which might be metal things, wood things, and air things (or things you shake, things you hit, and things you blow!). We’ll tell a story and create never-before-heard musical sounds to illustrate. After some practice, David will conduct us in our brand new Grand Sound Jam Symphony! Fun and amazing for all ages.
1:30pm – Folk Jam – Liz Faiella, Jordan Tirrell-Wysocki, and David Surette (Community Room)
For the Folk Jam at 1:30pm, faculty members Liz Faiella, Jordan Tirrell-Wysocki, and David Surette invite fellow fiddlers, guitarists, mandolinists, and banjo players to a traditional folk jam (other trad instruments welcome, too!) We’ll play Appalachian, New England, and Celtic tunes together in a session-style atmosphere. Liz, Jordan, and David have played sessions around the world, and can’t wait to jam with you!
1:45pm – Wind Ensemble Read-athon – Stefani Burk (Lower leve)
The Wind Ensemble Read-athon gathers at 1:45, with wind department chair Stefani Burk leading woodwind and brass instruments in making some music together just for fun! Bring your instruments and your friends from town band, community orchestra, and school ensembles, and Stefani will provide parts for most woodwind and brass instruments. Intermediate (and up!) players of all ages are welcome.
2:45pm – Vocal Jam & Community Sing – Peggo Horstmann Hodes (Community Room)
Songweavers director Peggo Horstmann Hodes leads the Vocal Jam & Community Sing at 2:45pm. Drawing from the teachings of Bobby McFerrin and Ysaye Maria Barnwell, Peggo will help attendees create an amazing soundscape with their voices. At the Music School, we believe that everyone can sing – and we invite you to enjoy the marvel of singing together in a community of all ages and musical voices. After we jam for a while, we’ll finish with a Community Sing of familiar songs.
Surprise musical moments! In and around the participatory sessions, you may catch a 5-minute performance by the Canterbury Singers, the Redwings Youth Folk Ensemble, the CCMS Saxophone Quartet, the Scholarship Folk Ensemble, or the Northern Lights Vocal Ensemble – and perhaps a musical flash mob or two!
Refreshments will be available at the Community Music Fest, as well as a raffle and other ways to support the Financial Aid Fund & the Music School's mission of inclusion.
