Choral singing builds musical skills and life skills in a fun, social environment. The Purple Finches are composed of three divisions to allow for an age-appropriate sequence of musical development. Participants learn basic music elements through high quality literature such as rhythm, solfège, ear-training, memory development, hand signs, proper singing technique and complementary instrumental work in ukulele and recorder. For children also learning an instrument, it strengthens sight-reading, ear-training, and rhythmic security. For others, it’s an excellent introduction to music. And for all, it’s a rich experience of creativity and self-expression.
The Fledglings, Fliers, and Finches Select choruses have performed frequently “in house” at the Music School as well as in other venues. In 2019, the chorus performed at Canterbury Shaker Village and at the Governor’s Mansion for the annual December Tree Lighting Ceremony. In early March of 2020, some of our choristers attended OAKE National Choirs in Portland, Oregon...out of necessity, we later expanded our performance abilities with Virtual Concerts.
We are thrilled to be preparing for a season of outdoor rehearsals and performance of Into the Woods Jr. in 2021 -- click here for info!
Participation in Fledglings develops the child’s natural voice and establishes a good singing range through rounds, partner songs, folk songs & dance, composed songs, and other high-quality repertoire. A typical class will consist of rhythmic games, solfege games, play party songs, recorder playing, folk dance and lots of singing!
Fliers practice widens the vocal range and develops further harmonic and rhythmic security through work with songs in two-and three-part harmony. Some of the tools we will use this fall semester to enhance our Virtual Chorus Classes include Zoom Break-Out Rooms for sectionals, Smart Music & Breezin’ Thru Music Theory, Ukuleles & Recorders, Google Classroom, & virtual concerts.
Finches Select is for students who desire to learn more about vocal technique and choral singing. This chorus focuses on developing strong literacy as well as technical skills, such as intonation, breathing, proper vocal production, and diction skills. Performances of a wide variety of repertoire develop musical maturity and vocal confidence. Some of the tools we will use this fall semester to enhance our Virtual Chorus Classes include Zoom Break-Out Rooms for sectionals, Smart Music & Breezin’ Thru Music Theory, Ukuleles & Recorders, Google Classroom, & virtual concerts.
