Classical, Folk, Jazz, and Beyond: Music School's Spring Semester Offers Range of Musical Opportunities Print For Immediate Release: January 16, 2015 CONCORD, N.H.—Registration is now open for the Concord Community Music School’s spring semester. From classical to classic rock, early childhood programs to ensembles, and flutes to fiddles, the Music School provides a wide range of opportunities for students of all ages and levels to pursue their musical interests. Offerings include private lessons and ensembles, as well as early childhood programs, music therapy programs, and choruses. The spring semester starts January 26. Choruses Purple Finches The Purple Finches includes three age levels—the Fledglings, the Fliers, and the Finches. All teach musical literacy through regular rhythm, solfege and ear-training, based on Kodaly methods. Songweavers Based on the belief that everyone can sing, members of this large women's chorus learn songs by rote, in the African-American tradition. Repertoire includes music from many ethnic traditions. The singing is predominantly a cappella, although drums and other instruments are often used as accompaniment. Sunflower Singers Sunflower Singers brings adults with developmental disabilities and their care providers together each week to sing familiar songs, accompanied by spontaneous harmonica and percussion playing. This joyful sing-along is free of charge, thanks to the generosity of its funders. Early Childhood Programs Music & Movement Sing, play, and dance with us! Open to all children 5 months to 7 years old and their parents/caregivers. Recorder Classes Learning to play recorder is an excellent way for children to develop note-reading, melodic, and rhythmic skills, and to acquire the breathing, articulation, and fingering techniques necessary for playing a brass or woodwind instrument. Suzuki Violin Program Suzuki Talent Education offers a curriculum of music instruction based on the mother-tongue method. This process applies the ideas of language learning to music education, encouraging students to achieve musical fluency and comfort while building their self-esteem. Take Three This experiential class, team-taught by three of our faculty members, is designed as an introduction to individual instruction in piano. Seamlessly integrating the elements of rhythm, ear-training, and reading, each class will include a combination of creative movement, singing, recorder, and piano. Ensembles Elementary ensembles are designed to be the first group experience for instrumentalists who have played for several years. They often include several musicians playing the same part. At the intermediate level, doubling of parts provides security as students move toward the independent playing needed for advanced ensembles. At all levels, rehearsals emphasize intonation, cueing, rhythmic security, and cooperation. Frequent ensemble performances at the Music School and beyond provide incentives and fun. Other Classes Adult Chamber Ensembles The Music School works with interested adult students to arrange small chamber music ensembles, coached by faculty members. Adult Piano Class Group classes are an ideal way for adults to learn in a comfortable and supportive setting, alongside their peers. Course content is geared to adults who are new to the piano or who are returning to their musical studies after some time away. Adult Ukulele Ensemble The ukulele is a fun and easy-to-learn instrument that is experiencing a surge in popularity. Students develop musicianship through learning basic chords, simple strums, and fun songs. African-Style Drumming Beginners and drummers with some experience learn African hand-drumming techniques taught in the oral tradition. Students play the drums, shakers, and bells used in African, Afro-Cuban, and Afro-Contemporary ensemble settings. Beatles Ensemble If you love the Beatles, this is your group. The ensemble will play original arrangements of Beatles songs such as “Strawberry Fields Forever” and “A Day in the Life.” Introduction to Recording Offering the opportunity to study the equipment and techniques of the recording studio, this class provides students a hands-on experience with live recording and mixing down to the final CD. Songwriting Turn musical and lyrical ideas into finished songs. Explore a variety of techniques for writing lyrics and melodies, and discover how to develop interesting harmonic accompaniments. At the end of the semester, students will learn how to use the recording studio to create finished recordings of their work. Women’s Vocal Ensemble Members of this ensemble will explore the art form of a cappella singing in a small group setting. Selections will include many genres from classical to gospel to contemporary.
