Gubernatorial inauguration proceedings in January were marked by multiple State House performances by Music School student ensembles. Kudos to the Scholarship Woodwind Quartet who played at the inauguration and the Cabbageheads who played at the Governor's first Executive Council meeting. Trilogy, comprised of Sam and Katie Allman and Audrey Budington, performed at the the Governor's Open House in the Representatives Hall. These exciting student performances were lauded by Governor Hassan who praised our talented performers in remarks that included "Dear wonderful musicians, thank you so much for helping to make the day so terrific." The Concord Community Music School was honored to be an integral part of this important celebration of New Hampshire citizens and government.

Despite the deep freeze outdoors, inside Concord Community Music School jazz musicians were busy this past month sending us into the warmth of places south of the border.  With pieces such as La Fiesta by Chick Corea, andMambo Jambo by Perez Prado, the seven-member Musicians of Wall Street Jazz Ensemble played an extraordinary program rich in tropical sounds and peppered with original tunes.  Thanks to Hermanos Cocina Mexicanafor supplying the 175 audience members with delicious Mexican eats that added more flavor to the evening.

Following their faculty member's Friday night, January 25th performance, students in the jazz department put on their own amazing show of swinging tunes on Tuesday, January 29th, during the Jazz Recital.  For a taste of that evening's musical delights, click here to hear and see the ensemble in action.

And for a truly global jazz experience, we are pleased to share a recent virtual hello from jazz alumnus Matt Hogan '00, who is a professional bass player in Tokyo, Japan.  On the day his jazz mentors, David Tonkin and Don Williams, took to the stage for Jazz in January, Matt wrote in to connect with our community and share his musical memories of learning bass and piano at the Music School. Check out Matt's Web site www.hoganbass.com to get a glimpse of what this local sensation is doing on the rock and jazz scene in Japan.

"Awake My Soul" - a sublime experience

Finches at Concord Chorale

In a true display of joy through singing marked by patience, poise, and professionalism, the Purple Finches Chorus was at their very best sharing the stage with the Concord Chorale performing the Mass of the Children on Sunday, January 27. The "Awake My Soul" Concert at St. John the Evangelist Church was a shining moment for the Music School with our children's chorus under the direction of Maria Isaak bringing the audience to tears through their beautiful and touching song delivery.  Congratulations to Music School friends, students, and faculty of all generations who participated in this tremendous collaborative project.
